editorial_______________________________________________________________What is collaboration? This is the question I posed to contributors for this issue of transmissions. I felt the need to ask the question after looking back at various projects, in which I was involved, that were created 'in collaboration' with others artists, and particularly after I took a course on collaboration taught by David MacMurray Smith and Leofwin Luke. What I have noticed over time is that different artists, myself included, have different definitions for collaboration. I have also sensed a feeling of resentment, or feeling burned, in response to collaborating. I have since learned that these feelings are not necessarily attached to collaboration per se, but rather to misunderstandings and miscommunications between collaborating artists as to the definitions of the process in which they have all engaged. The five contributors in this issue have all collaborated under varying definitions and have varying things to say in response to their experiences. My intention has been to give a place for their voices to be heard. Some pieces are written from an experiential point of view, others use a more argumentative approach; some may resolve questions, others may lead to new queries; some are more difficult to follow, others are easier. It is obvious that defining collaboration is no easy task. My hat goes off to the contributors for their efforts in clarifying what collaboration is to each of them, and sharing those thoughts with the readers of transmissions. My thanks goes to Adrienne Wong for her continuous support, guidance and direction, to Michel D Bisson for her timely pieces of advice, to proofreaders Noah Drew, Adrienne Wong, Kim Plough and Toni Rozylo, and to Rumble Productions for the opportunity to put out the question. With that, I invite you, the reader, to delve into the question of 'What is collaboration?', and bring your findings back into your work and the community.
