Progress Lab 1422
In February 2011 The Directors’ Lab made its debut as a part of the PuSh Assembly. The call for directors yielded an impressive roster of candidates and, after a difficult decision process, eight directors were selected to participate: Stephen Drover, Kendra Fanconi, Amiel Gladstone, Craig Hall, Cameron Mackenzie, Mindy Parfitt, Rachel Peake and Diane Roberts.
The Lab brought together a Master Director, Matthew Jocelyn of the Canadian Stage Company (photo inset), and the eight selected participants to discuss, debate, challenge and investigate the directing process.
The four-day intensive took place February 1-4, 2011 in the rehearsal space at PL 1422.
ABOUT THE FACILIATOR/MASTER DIRECTOR: Matthew Jocelyn was appointed Artistic & General Director of Canadian Stage in February 2009, and assumed full-time responsibilities in July 2009. A native Torontonian, Jocelyn has spent the bulk of his career in Europe where he has worked extensively as an arts administrator, producer and director of theatre and opera, as a translator of plays and as an educator. Prior to his appointment at Canadian Stage, Jocelyn was the Artistic & General Director of the Atelier du Rhin in Alsace, France for 10 years. He was responsible for establishing the organization as a major centre for multi-disciplinary arts. As a result of his accomplishments, he was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by France’s Ministry of Culture in July 2008, one of the country’s most prestigious arts honours. Jocelyn continues to direct productions abroad, and made his Canadian Stage debut as translator and director of the first production in the 2010/11 season, Fernando Krapp Wrote Me This Letter.
