Another girl is missing, another parent's nightmare: then she is an unsettling skip across fantasy and reality to the outer regions of redemption and personal civility.

An intricate psychological drama, then she centers on Jordan O'Reilly and his wife, Anne, whose daughter has disappeared. It is a multi-character play that moves back and forth across different time frames and realities, dissecting the disintegration of the couple's relationship as they both struggle to find some kind of peace now that their only child is, perhaps, gone forever. The development of then she was supported by the Playwrights' Theatre Centre and Rumble's 2001/02 Pilots program.

The premier of then she features Andrea Johnston, Paulo Ribeiro, Toni Rozylo, Andrew Olewine, Brendan Stitchman and Adrienne Wong. Direction is by David Gram, with design by Dawn Bassett-Chambers (costumes), Yvan Morissette (lighting), Daniel Rendall (sound), and Trevor Guernsey (set).

A spit of a town on the edge of a glacial sheet. Snowsuits, German porn and cocaine. Simple people simply scraping by. One dead body and your whole life can change.

Snowman is a new Canadian play by award-winning playwright Greg MacArthur. Snowman is a darkly comic journey into a frozen, emotionally barren landscape of ice and snow. Set in a remote community at the edge of a glacial sheet, Snowman unfolds in a series of interwoven monologues that expose the lives of a confused couple and their friends, as they eek out a marginal existence. The discovery of an ancient body frozen deep in the ice, and the arrival of an outsider (an archaeologist) sets in motion a struggle for identity and escape. The premier of Snowman will mark the culmination of a cross Canada journey for the play: it received workshop productions in Toronto and Ottawa and was fine tuned at the Banff Playwrights Colony.

The premier of Snowman features Kevin MacDonald, Jody-Kay Marklew, Derek Metz and Erin Monahan. Direction is by Craig Hall, with design by Yvan Morrisette (set and lighting) and Robert Perrault (live sound score), and stage management by Erin Neligan.

The Young & The Restless
Backgrounder

Rumble's The Young & The Restless profiles those at the forefront of a new generation of Vancouver theatre-makers. It showcases emerging artists at an exciting and integral part of their development - a time when, as individuals and emerging companies, they are seeking skills, access and recognition, and when they are evolving their working process and developing an individual style of theatre. The Young & The Restless offers a unique career opportunity to emerging theatre-makers, through professional guidance and supervision, hands-on experience, team learning, organizational growth and development, and the provision of resources necessary for the realization of self-initiated productions.

New work by emerging playwrights, directors and artists is being produced at an astonishing rate in Vancouver. Those with the ambition of creating their own organizations need opportunities to work directly with seasoned professionals - to gain the fundamental knowledge and application of what it takes to write, create, direct, fundraise and produce one's own work. They need to be able to focus wholeheartedly on artistic challenges and be relieved of the demands and financial costs of a venue and technical crew, and of promoting their work. The Young & The Restless serves to facilitate self-initiated projects that deserve more than the Fringe circuit can support: i.e., inclusion in a curated program, professional guarantees, appropriate technical time and specialized promotion.

An initiative that evolved innocently enough from its beginnings in 1998, The Young & The Restless is now a dynamic and permanent fixture in the Rumble's annual programming. Past presentations of The Young & The Restless have included Adrienne Wong's Other Women, solo works from recent graduates of Studio 58, Tangled Tongues Performance with Foreign Bodies and Tandem Productions with Samuel Beckett's Footfalls.

Founded in 1990, Rumble Productions collaborates with visionary artists from Vancouver and beyond, to produce and present for the theatre and other media. Since its inception, Rumble has presented the work of over 200 Canadian performing artists, developed ten original plays, and received 23 Jessie nominations and five Jessie awards.
