National Post
Award-winning Calgary theatre company One Yellow Rabbit (OYR) paints a hallucinogenic chronicle of the American Beat movement, including William S. Burroughs and his Canadian mentor Brion Gysin in this new, genre-defying theatrical concert.
At the centre of the 1950s Beat circle, Burroughs and Gysin worked tirelessly to build the enigmatic Dream Machine, a device that used flickering light to alter brain waves and plunge the user into a waking dream state, free from the influences of advertising and mass culture.
An exploration of their iconoclastic aesthetic and context forms the basis of OYR's unconventional musical about this group of notoriously wild outsiders, whose spiritual and artistic quest changed popular culture forever. Blending live and electronic music, haunting visuals and OYR's trademark physicality, Dream Machine is a radical departure from both the traditional theatre musical and the conventional bio pic.
One Yellow Rabbit's last visit to the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (Doing Leonard Cohen) played to sold-out houses. Other OYR shows include Ilsa, Queen of the Nazi Love Camp, Mata Hari: Tigress at the City Gates and Thunderstruck. Composer David Rhymer is a multi-award winning composer and writer, involved in the creation of a number of Canadian music theatre successes including Ilsa, Queen of the Nazi Love Camp and Mata Hari: Tigress at the City Gates (both with OYR), Devil Box Cabaret (with Vancouver's Neworld Theatre), and Trouser Parts (with Vancouver's felix culpa).
Touchstone Master Class with Denise Clarke: April 7 – 10, 2003. An accomplished teacher as well as a distinctive actor, dancer, choreographer and director, Denise's work has influenced a generation of theatre and dance artists. Limited to 15 participants. Call 604.709.9973 for registration and information.
