A fresh interpretation of a theatre classic
Hedda Gabler
by Henrik Ibsen, adapted by John Osborne
"Who has not, when standing with someone by an abyss or high up on a tower, had a sudden impulse to push them over?"
Henrik Ibsen
The Vancouver East Cultural Centre and Rumble Productions join together to produce a new look at a classic theatrical work: Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. Adapted by renowned British playwright John Osborne, Hedda Gabler reaches beyond its late nineteenth-century setting to reveal a surprisingly contemporary view into the complexities of human relations. A character tragedy unlike any other in modern drama, Hedda Gabler is the great dramatist's most controlled and ruthless work, a play whose impact has not lessened since its premiere in 1890.
Directed by Rumble Productions' Artistic Producer Norman Armour, Hedda Gabler features six of Vancouver's most celebrated actors: Camyar Chai, Bernard Cuffling, Patricia Drake, David Marr, Wendy Noel and Donna White-veterans of such theatres as the Vancouver Playhouse, Bard on the Beach and the Arts Club. As well, an award-winning team of theatre artists are designing the show: Barbara Clayden (costumes), Andreas Kahre (set) and John Webber (lighting). Rachel Ditor will act as dramaturge on this new interpretation, and the production features live piano accompaniment by Chris Gerrard-Pinker, adding an evocative new layer of meaning to the experience of the play.
Hedda Gabler runs November 30-December 7 at 8 pm (no show December 2), with a 2-for-1 matinée performance on Saturday, December 7 at 2 pm, and 2-for-1 previews Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 at 8 PM. Tickets are $28 for adults, $20 for students and seniors and can be purchased through the Ticketmaster network at 604.280.3311 or www.ticketmaster.ca. Hedda Gabler is also part the VECC's subscription package-subscribers can see three shows in the VECC's 2002-03 season for just $54, including all service charges. Group orders are welcome and groups of 10 or more pay $14 per ticket. For evening group bookings, call 604-251-1363.
